G21-P024 Ceasing All Federal Funding for Nuclear Energy Research and Development | VGM- 2 Rejected by membership

Avatar: Official proposal Official proposal
02/06/2021 18:16

Submitter Name

Eva Schacherl

The proposal was rejected by membership at VGM -2 with 77% of members in attendance voting to reject

Proposal

Canadian Greens will not support “next-generation” nuclear reactors, which produce toxic radioactive waste dangerous to the environment and all living things for hundreds of thousands of years, increase the risk of nuclear accidents and proliferation, detract from and are more costly than clean renewable energy.

Objective

To protect the health and environment of current and future generations of Canadians from deadly radioactive waste and to stop reckless spending on unaffordable, dirty, dangerous and unsustainable nuclear energy.

Benefit

Ending federal government spending on nuclear energy will expedite the transition to clean and sustainable energy sources. Responsible management of radioactive waste in Canada will protect the environment as well as Northern, remote and First Nations communities that are often identified for nuclear waste and nuclear energy projects.

Well, it did get yellow-lit. We need to ensure it passes at the convention.

This is not about grey goo nor AI. Processed that threaten to self-perpetuate. All science and tech are value-neutral. In North America, nuclear regulation is the gold standard for safety that should be applied to all no -renewable power. There exists enough low grade uranium and Thorium to last any population of humans 100 years, long enough to transition to renewables fully or develop cold fusion. Who knows, that may even be enough time to build solar power in space and beam it back to earth, eliminating the land use problem.
